Catch-up time.
It has been awhile. Very bz on the non-ultimate front. Trying hard to get out of school and occasionally looking into jobs. Anyway, I did not go to Boston. But we had ~19 guys go. If everyone played their best and no one got injured, a chance at a title was possible. Well, the above 2 things did not hold true. Suffice it to say, we at least achieved (not over or under, I think).
After everyone got home, the difficult task, finalize the team. We went from huge to not so huge after the 2nd round. ~32/33 guys, but a couple of injuries took 2 guys away. After it was all said and done, we settled on 27, BUT we are still looking at 2 guys. One of which was injured another of which was out of the country for all of tryouts. We shall see how it goes. So at least 27 guys, possible 29. Why so big? Well, 2 returners have been on the dl all year long. Plus, some other struggles with that. Plus, some out of the country guys over the next couple of months. And well, I bet we will be no more than 25 healthy guys in October. It just always seems to work out that way. Due to out of towners during the fall, this assures of 3 practices w/ > 15 guys every practice. Plus, it allows us to brainwash everyone into our way of playing.
So 5 "new" guys definitely. "New" because 2 guys were on the team in 04. One left the country for a year. The other was cut and now back as solid as ever.
After Boston, we always take a couple of weeks off. We had 2 major leaguers on the team.
Throughout July, we have optional Goaltimate on Weds. That started this past week. Although it does not look like I will be able to improve my short distance blades for awhile.
And we kicked off the summer tourney schedule w/ the Minneapolis Ultimate Disc INvitational. 16 teams, actually the best comp ever at the this year's version. Madison + Chicago came. Of course, since we were the 1 seed, we would only get to play 1 off them. I thought of trying to argue for a power pool format. But never really put that much effort into designing one.
Saturday saw pool play. We had TBA (local Minneapolis team), St. John's (yet another small school w/ frisbee team) and Uncle Buck (guys from Wisconsin Steven's point and around there). It was really hot, so we played shorter games to 11, except for Uncle Buck, they wanted to goto 13. We won all 3. Buck scored 6 or so on us. The others were so close. Pre-quarters saw the wisconsin masters team. Again, not really the best game.
Sunday was not as hot, less wind to start, but thunderstorms. It was not running much, if at all. But there were visible lightning bolts nearby. We started ~1 hour late. Beat Liquid Assets, another local team. It was close early as we traded breaks to 3-3 or so. And then 7-4 and 13-5, I think.
The semis saw the Minnesota college team + friends. 10-0 at one point. Maybe 13-2.
The finals was against Machine. We always get a decent game in the finals of this tourney and w/ Machine, we always seem to play close. I think we were 1-1 with them last year.
Anyhow, the wind picked up. Mainly upwind/downwind, but a decent crosswind. Going upwind, if you were trapped on the forehand side, it could be difficult.
We pull to start, both teams are rusty. We have 2 chances on our endzone to score first, but then take the point 1-0. Our o turns it early, gets it back, and ties it up. 1-1. The game would be like that to 4-4, I believe. In those first 4 points, we were 0-6 on break opportunities. Our O had 2 turns, but got both back.
Our first break comes after a failed centering pass by Machine. A couple passes later, we are up 5-4. They score and immediately break back. 5-6 machine. Both O's score to end half 6-7, on serve, Machine. We finished, on d, 1-8 on breaks. Our scored 6-7, but had 3 turns total (maybe 4).
We receive going downwind to start the 2nd half, we score fairly easily, 7s. Finally, we start to convert on turns. The college kids come through big to go up 8-7 and we convert the downwinder to go 9-7. I believe that 9-7 point was a long grind point. We allowed a bunch of throws, but they were not able to go very far upfield. No hucks off. A bunch of swings, finally a turn, and after a timeout a conversion.
They make it 9-8, but the O playing strong goes 10-8. The d adds 2 more goals, to extend the lead. The O puts it aways 13-9. 7-2 in the 2nd half. I am not sure if the O turned it in the 2nd half. Maybe once. The d though only had 2 turns, which was much better. Not great, but definitely not bad for the first time together in a couple of weeks.
A couple of ez weeks of practice before Colorado Cup and another good test of where we are. Should be fun.
Oh, Superman Returns is good.
Matchpoint not so good.
Footloose is classic.
Gnarls Barkeley is good.
New Strokes ok, although the first song is addictive.
