Hmmm, it seems my days are numbered on the frisbee field. It has been a crazy past 5 months that has involved basically no frisbee, besides showing up to the occasional practice for ~1 hour and then leaving bummed that I could not play. For the first time since sophomore year in college, frisbee was not a priority at all. BUT I did get my schooling done and well, my family increased by one.

So yeah, it was a great year. And we are heading out of the great Central region. I will be moving to Hamilton, Montana working for one of the big pharma companies out there. Everywhere I tried to go, they told me I needed more experience (great, now a phd is not enough). Well, I guess Hamilton, MT is the perfect place for that experience gathering mission.

What may surprise you is that Hamilton does not seem to have much frisbee. Part of the bummer is frisbee has been so much of our social scene. Although it is close to Missoula, so I am thinking it is time to strap on the ol' summer league cleats. I have not played summer league since Ann Arbor in 99. It should be a good time and I think I found some stuff about the league, at least last year's league. Or maybe it will be good not to hang out with frisbee players all the time.

There is a competitive co-ed team in Missoula. So maybe we will play co-ed... Now, if I only had not made fun of co-ed so much, it would not feel so weird to say that. Or I will rent myself out to the highest bidder. Highest bidder being very key there.

Oh, Jim- the secret to a Huck 'n' Hope team is they can also be flash in the pan teams. For example, you could argue Zero 99 was a HnH team. Pike of 04. Ring of 02. So yeah, AJ I am looking at you right now. Where will Chain fall? Basically, if a team flounders in the 8-12 range, jumps up the semis and then falls back down to the > 10 range, they were probably HnH. That is my theory and I am sticking to it. Maybe sometime if I can find the time I will expand on this theory. Cheers.

Tim,

You are correct that a high-variability strategy will increase the odds of an upset. That's good if you're the upstart but less good if you're the better team, unless you really like exciting games.

Congrats on the move and entering the real world. For graduation, maybe I'll send you a "Read More!" button or a title.

First - you're already loaded the deck against me with your "where will chain fall" comment...maybe this is just the first step on the way to a chain dynasty - i've already marked the dvd of this nationals games 0 of 7.

Having said that, I definitely think there's something to what your saying. On the other hand - In a lot of ways, I think the burden of proof is on the possession folks - Relentless aggression has shown to be the most effective strategy at the last 6 natties.

Hey, I'm an advocate of the Sensible Long Game. DoG got its start by hucking a ton, sometimes on the first pass (although of course the savvy reader will know that we did it mindfully).

There is no doubt that teams employing HnH have been wildly successful. But "proof" or even the preponderance of evidence would require us to look at how other teams using HnH have done, and whether HnH teams have experimented with other styles (maybe when Sockeye splits at spring tournaments, X is actually the conservative half and Y is the aggressive half) and found them to be wanting. (Or tried to cut deep just as aggressively but wait for a little more margin before deciding to chuck it.)

Or maybe the decision-making on these throws is actually no different than what a "possession" team uses, and that it's just the number and quality of deep cuts that is so much better.

Missoula has a great frisbee scene, yeah it's co-ed, but its a fun team and they went to nationals this year. You might be pleasantly surprised by the level of play in the other Mo-town.

Shane - I have heard good things about the Missoula frisbee scene. Hopefully, we are able to get up there to check out and maybe even play.

AJ/Ryan/Jim - just throwing something out to see what was said. Zero in 99 was a definite HnH team (they did make the quarters in 00 through 02 as well). But I feel a consistent semis team is different then a team who gets to the semis once in the middle of a bunch of quarters' years

Pike did make quarters in 05. But everyone knew stop Bailey hucking it to Danny and you could beat them. For the most part, teams did that.

Ring is an interesting team who is up and down. 97 semis with dog on the ropes. 02 finals/ 03 semis. Although I will take full credit for their 02 success. I threw away our gamepoint, they go onto win. And they get Bravo in the quarters, which in those days was a free pass to the semis. Harsh, but true. While my incompletion caused us to play Furious in the quarters, a free pass to the consolation bracket.

Chain has always been at least prequarters if not quarters. But they are a team that the first thing you say on the line is don't let them huck. Pretty much the same for Bravo, but they are always in the quarters. So I would classify HnH teams, and did they take advantage of the relative inexperience they played in the quarters?

Does anyone else think that if Justice League made nationals one of those 2 teams would not have made semis? Can a team be 5th at regionals, but still be considered a semis team b/c of their past performance?

By the way, congrats to Chain and Bravo. I do not want to take anything away from their accomplishments. It just seems hard to crack the semis (at least that is my experience).

And just to state the obvious, I am bitter for not making semis. And I am just poking fun at Chain for taking down my squad.

Tim - We're glad you are coming out this way. And as Shane saiud, I think you will be surprised at the level of play here in Missoula. Despite the lack of population, we have a 200 person spring league with good play and MTF (Mental Toss Flycoons) is made up of extremely talented and athletic folks, some who played in other divisions before and some who have won nationals and worlds in mixed. We made a nice run this year at nationals, missing a guaranteed top 8 spot by loosing to Tandem 15-13 in the game to jump.
I remember with fondness the days of the Nardel nasty nines and the Lorax-Ann Arbor connection...back when you were in high school. I am really looking forward to seeing you on the fields out here, surrounded by mountains!

Tim,

As one of those youngsters you used to play or sit I feel I might be able to bring a little levity to your situation. Actually, I might bring a lot o' levity seeing as I played for Fligenplatte in Blaine '00 (otherwise known as the superclusterfuck 24-team co-eds). Knowing you and Theresa, and the intensity you both bring to the field, I think you'd love coed. I know you think I'm just some idiot, and with good reason. That being said, I think your competitive personality could push any coed team you play with to the highest level. I haven't seen you or your wife play in some time but I remember that you both bring a warrior attitude to the game. I think that philosophy combined with the intrinsic skills you both possess could and should lead to your team dominating the field. Also, and this is my observation from playing with people I'v been attracted to (not that I had a chance with 'em), when you have an emotional connection with your teammate you'll fight harder than you could comprehend. Actually, that's the reason I really like coed. I've always felt that my happiness depended on performing and winning so my teammate felt good. Not the best idea emotionally... on the other hand, I've never been concerned about sacrificing my health to win...

Pssssshhhh...
anyways, I'm really happy that your family is growing and healthy. God bless all of you and good luck in Montana.
